The FIA World Rallycross Championship might be the championship with the most diverse grid. Here we regularly see cars from Audi, VW, Citroën, Peugeot, Volvo, Saab, Hyundai, Renault and so on. The penultimate round this year will see another make entering, with Gigi Galli and his Kia Rio
So far, this is only a one-off appearance for the Italian fan favourite, who just missed out of the semifinals last year. The car is brand new, so the goals aren’t too high either:
We will introduce ourselves at the Italian World RX round at Franciacorta next month. Our aim is not to win, it would be foolish to think we could do that straightaway – we simply want to demonstrate how hard we have worked so far.
“How hard we’ve worked so far”. That means more to come, right? And building a brand new car for a one-off doesn’t make sense either.
I’d love to see Galli do a full WorldRX season next year, he’ll surely be as spectacular as Petter Solberg has been so far. In a stunning looking car, with a livery as classic as anyone. This is just getting better.
UPDATE 8/10-15: From a recent interview during testing, Galli states that this is the beginning of a three-year program. He will be at the start-line at the 2016 World Rallycross Championship, but is still quite conservative regarding the development of the car. The Italian round in a bit over a week will give a lot of answers. I’m just happy that we’ll see another spectacular driver in a very spectacular series!
