Round 5?! How are we already on to round 5 of the season?
The season is screaming by and this weekend it’s a rare trip to the southern hemisphere for the always-exciting Rally Argentina. Will this year’s event come down to a furious dash on the wild downhill power stage like the last two years?
“That Ford is looking more and more like a Volkswagen every outing.” That line from Colin Clark summed up the last round in Corsica perfectly as Sebastien Ogier took full advantage of being first on the road in one of the few places where that’s a good thing and led the rally from start to finish. Others weren’t so lucky, as Loeb got stuck in a ditch on day 1, Latvala hit a tree and damaged his roll cage, and Meeke did a Meeke (this time courtesy of a bad pace note from Paul Nagle) and literally flew off the road. Due to this Fantasy WRC competitor fortunes were... mixed. Peter Kocandrle, who won the week, was the big mover, jumping up ten spots into second place, while The Justache was the biggest loser, dropping ten spots to 17th. Also known as “still doing better than Dusty.”
Now on to Argentina and what may be the toughest event to predict. This was once the playground of Sebastien Loeb, who won it eight times straight, but since his retirement the rally has seen four different winners (including two first-time winners), none of them named Seb. This is the one rally Ogier has never won, though he’s come second three times. The rally is known for massive crowds, high speeds, and huge carnage when things go wrong. Good chance at least one car will leave Argentina looking like a ball of wadded up tinfoil (and not the polished kind). Your job is to make sure you don’t pick that car. Good luck.
