With the long summer break ending with Rally Finland a couple weeks ago we’re back to rapid fire rounds, and this week we’re headed to Germany for their legendary tarmac. And this year we’ve got boots on the ground (well, more accurately toe shoes on the ground) as Stef Schrader is in Deutschland attending her first ever rally. Way to go big, Stef. Also I hate you right now.
Finland saw the return of Ott Tanak to the head of the class after a few rough rounds. Ott took the lead on the first day and from then to the finish no one else even came close. It was a dominant performance topped off by a win on a powerstage with one of the biggest jumps in WRC history at the finish line.
Unsurprisingly it was the players who picked Tanak that scored all the points. 15 players had the Estonian on their rosters, and when it was all said and done they swept the top 10 and made up 13 of the top 15. Hot Dog McKoy was the big winner, managing to get all three podium places correct, and four of the top 5. In the season championship James Beckett still continues to lead, but that lead is down to just six points over Marzobomber, with Shane Hutton another two points back. And to make things even more fun this is the final event before we start dropping everyone’s worst scores.
And now Germany, an event described by drivers as three rallies in one due the the diverse nature of each day’s roads. Rallye Deutschland is known for behing one of the fastest as well as one of the most challenging and unforgiving events on the calendar. The rally regularly catches out the very best in the sport, and typically when you go off here you go big. This is also an event where road position is important, but in the opposite direction to the gravel events. Deutschland is known for frequent cutting in the corners, which pulls more dirt and mud onto the road with each passing car. This can make things very slippery for drivers in the second half of the field.
