Leg 2 of the Canadian Rally Championship kicks off June 3 to 5 in beautiful Invermere, British Columbia for the Rocky Mountain Rally! A new time of year for the rally should make a blast for spectators and more manageable for drivers after last years mid-rally cancellation due to weather.
With the entry filled up it looks like it should be a great rally again this year. Antoine L’Estage in his Subaru Canada STI is always a heavy favourite in these races though he will be playing catchup in the standings after a mechanical problem slowed him during Rally Perce Niege. There is also a trio of other teams gunning for the podium. Maxime Labrie in his 2002 STI is the current championship leader and hopes to keep the momentum rolling. Alexandre Béland and Lyne Murphy hope to get there new wide-body STI dialled in even more and be able to push harder after a conservative run in the first leg. A big thrill for fans should be Joël Levac and Stephanie Lewis bringing there WRC Mini out to the western races for the first time. This car attracts lots of fans and has one of the coolest sounds of the field. Brandon Semenuk, of Red Bull mountain bike fame, is coming off a strong finish at Rally of the Tall Pines and hope to land on the podium!
With 15 teams entering the 2WD division it should make for an interesting finish. The field in this division is very diverse and includes an Acura RSX, a Merkur Xr4ti, a Porsche 911, a BMW M3, a Volvo 240, a Honda Civic, a Ford Focus, a Suzuki Swift and a pair of early model Corolla’s. These lower budget teams may not challenge for the overall podium but have a lot of fun in this varied group of manufactures. Full entry list here.
Gravel instead of snow should make the 172km rally much different than what the fans are used to in this area and should make for higher speed fun! The beautiful city of Invermere is located about 3 hours west of Calgary along beautiful lake Windermere. More info on the rally can be found here and follow CRC’s Facebook and Instagram for more info during the rally.
